My interest in spotted Holsteiners started with Locksley Spotlight v. Churchill.   I had been breeding Holsteiners since 1987 (first stallion was Champagne v. VDL Chin-Chin) and plain black bay to me was classic.  But when I first set eyes on Locksley Spotlight, I was hooked!  He was 17 hands, black and white and pure power over fences.  He passed many years ago but not before producing his last foal, BROADWAY boogie-woogie.  BROADWAY is now producing spotted foals to solid mares and pedigrees of only 4.4% appaloosa!

I am focused on the credibility of this unusual breeding from both perspectives, breed associations and showing.

There are numerous association opportunities.  BROADWAY is nominated ISR/OLD, stallion approvals.  He was nominated before the rule change from 85% to 100% approved blood.  His full sister, Camille, was approved OLD with ISR/OLD and was highest scoring mare at her site. BROADWAY is registered PHR, RPSI book II and IRC. Should AHHA pass their new registry (Feb meeting '06), we will particiate in this registry.

As a competitor, I understand breeding means very little to most riders. Bottom line is you have to do both. The breeders need support from associations to validate their expenses in a foal. But in the long run, to fetch a profitable price the resluting foal needs to be competitive as a show horse. IHF nominations help bridge the gap between breeders and mature show horses. As our shows become even more competitive each year, unusual color on a fancy horse will get you that second look in a large class!

AHHA Breeders:

AHHA! Brave enough to be curious? Add some color to your Holsteiners and gain marketability! You have the ideal mares to produce color on world class horses with only 4.4% app blood. These foals can be entered into the AHHA awards program (currently as CP) and will be eligible for the new registry, should it get passed.
